The third option most people don’t hear about
If your home heats with a boiler, an indirect water heater beats both. It’s a well-insulated tank with a coil inside; the boiler heats it. No burner, no venting, no standby flame, and they routinely last 20+ years. Most of the mechanical rooms on our workmanship page are exactly this.

Which is cheaper over 20 years?
Closer than the sales pitch suggests. Tankless costs 2–3× more up front and saves roughly 15–25% on water heating; over 20 years in a gas home it usually pulls ahead — as long as it’s descaled and doesn’t need an early repair. In an electric home, a heat-pump tank often wins outright.
Can tankless keep up with two showers at once in winter?
A 199,000 BTU unit sized for our winter water, yes, for two. Three showers plus a dishwasher, no — and that’s the honest limit. A large tank or two tankless units handles the biggest households.
I have a boiler. Which should I get?
Neither — get an indirect tank. It uses the boiler as the burner, has no venting of its own, and routinely outlasts everything else. See our installs.
