Signs it’s time to replace, not repair

  • Water on the floor that’s coming from the tank itself, not a fitting (how to tell)
  • Rust-colored water from the hot taps only
  • The tank is 10+ years old and this is the second repair
  • Popping and rumbling that a flush didn’t fix — the sediment has baked on
  • It can’t keep up any more, and the family hasn’t grown

What a proper replacement looks like

A water heater swap is a two-to-four-hour job done right, and a lot of them in Rapid City weren’t. When we replace a tank we:

  1. Shut down, drain, and disconnect the old unit and get it out of the house
  2. Set the new unit, and correct anything the old install got wrong — undersized vent, missing expansion tank, no drain pan, a T&P line that dumps nowhere
  3. Make new connections with new shutoffs and dielectric fittings so the next plumber isn’t fighting corroded pipe
  4. Bring the gas line, venting, and electrical to current code
  5. Fill, purge, fire, set the temperature, check for leaks and CO, and walk you through it
  6. Haul the old one away and leave the space cleaner than we found it

Your options, straight

Standard tank (gas or electric) — cheapest to install, proven, 8–12 years in our water. Power-vent gas — for homes with no chimney or a shared, marginal flue; a few hundred more. Tankless — endless hot water, wall-mounted, 20-year life, higher upfront cost and it needs regular descaling here (tank vs. tankless, compared). Indirect — if you already have a boiler, this is often the best-value, longest-lasting option of all; see the installs on our workmanship page.

Current offers: $150 off gas, $100 off electric, $250 off tankless installed by us.

Questions we get about water heater replacement

Can you replace my water heater today?

Often, yes. Same-day service is usually available, and we tell you on the phone whether your size and fuel type can be done today; power-vent and tankless units sometimes need a day for the right model.

What size water heater do I need?

Most 2–3 bathroom Rapid City homes do fine on a 40- or 50-gallon tank. Bigger families, soaking tubs, or a household that runs the dishwasher, laundry, and showers at once should look at 50+ gallons or a tankless unit. We size it to how you actually use hot water, not to upsell.

Gas or electric?

Stay with what you have unless there’s a reason to switch — gas is cheaper to run in Rapid City, electric is cheaper to install. If you have no usable chimney, a power-vent gas unit or an electric tank solves that.

What’s included in the replacement price?

The unit, labor, new water connections and shutoff, gas flex or electrical hookup, T&P discharge line, expansion tank if your system is closed, venting to code, haul-away of the old tank, and the written warranty. Anything extra — a drain pan, relocating the unit, bringing an old gas line up to code — is quoted before we start.

No hot water? No heat? A leak?
