What to do right now
- Shut off the cold water supply — the valve on the pipe into the top of the tank. This stops the tank from refilling as it leaks.
- Cut the power or gas. Electric: the breaker. Gas: control knob to OFF. A heating element running in a partially drained tank burns out in minutes.
- Get water off the floor and away from anything that matters — a shop vac or towels. Wood subfloor and drywall soak fast.

If it’s the tank itself, yes — treat it as one. A pinhole in a rusted seam can open up to a full 40–50 gallon dump with no warning, plus whatever the supply line adds until someone shuts it off. Turn off the cold supply and the power/gas, then call.
Can a leaking water heater be repaired?
Fittings, the T&P valve, the drain valve, and element gaskets — yes. The tank body — no. Steel tanks rust from the inside; once they weep, they’re done, and the leak only gets bigger.
How do I shut it off?
