How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Rapid City?

What changes the price

• Fuel. Electric units are cheaper to buy and install (no venting) but cost more to run in Rapid City. Gas is the reverse.
• Venting. A good chimney keeps a standard atmospheric-vent unit on the table, which is the cheaper install. No chimney, or one that’s too big for a modern unit, means a power-vent or direct-vent model — better efficiency, more money.

• Timing. Nights, weekends, and holidays carry a dispatch fee we quote over the phone. A planned weekday replacement is the cheapest replacement.

Repair vs. replace

A repair visit for a common part is a fraction of a replacement. If the tank is under 8 years old and not leaking, that’s money well spent. If it’s past 10 and this is the second part in two years, put that money toward a new tank — the next failure is the tank itself, and it happens at the worst time.

How to get an accurate number in one phone call

Most of a water heater quote is decided by four things you can read off the unit and the room it’s in. Have these ready and we can usually price it over the phone:

1. The rating plate. Gallons and fuel type (gas or electric) are printed on the label on the side of the tank, along with the model and serial.
2. How it vents. Look at the top: a metal flue pipe heading into a chimney, or a plastic pipe running out a side wall (that’s a power-vent).
3. Where it lives. Basement next to a floor drain, a closet, a crawlspace, or upstairs — and whether a full-size tank can actually get to it.
4. Whether it’s leaking right now. Water on the floor around the base changes it from a planned job to an emergency one.

What a written quote should include

• The specific unit — brand, model, gallons, and warranty length
• Permit and inspection, where the job needs one
• Code items: expansion tank, T&P discharge line, drain pan, gas sediment trap
